Most people book an astrology consultation when something is already hurting — a marriage that will not settle, a career that keeps resetting, a health worry, a property dispute, a child's future. And most people come out of it unsatisfied, because they were told what will happen instead of being shown what is actually in the kundli.

This is a plain guide to what a real consultation with an experienced astrologer covers, how to prepare, what questions to ask, and how to tell a genuine jyotishi from someone selling fear.

What actually happens in a genuine consultation

A proper consultation is a reading, not a prophecy. It has a structure:

1. Chart casting — your janma kundli is cast from exact birth date, time and place. Lagna, Moon sign, nakshatra and the twelve bhavas are established.

2. Strength assessment — which grahas are strong, which are afflicted, which houses are supported. This is where an experienced astrologer spends most of the time.

3. Dasha analysis — Vimshottari mahadasha and antardasha. This is what decides timing, and it is the part most cheap readings skip entirely.

4. Question-specific houses — marriage reads the 7th and its lord plus Venus and the 2nd/11th; career the 10th, 6th and Saturn; health the 6th, 8th and lagna; money the 2nd, 11th and Jupiter.

5. Cross-checks — divisional charts (D9 Navamsa for marriage, D10 Dashamsha for career), transits of Saturn and Jupiter, and Ashtakavarga scores.

6. Remedies (upay) — only after the above. And they should be proportionate.

If someone gives you predictions in the first two minutes without looking at dashas, they are reading your face, not your chart.

What you must bring to the consultation

• Exact date of birth
• Exact time of birth — to the minute if possible, from the hospital record or birth certificate
• Place of birth — town or city, not just the state
• Your actual question, written down in one line
• Any earlier kundli or reading you already have
• For marriage matching: the same three details for the prospective match

If your birth time is unknown or uncertain, say so at the start. Experienced astrologers use birth-time rectification — working backwards from known life events (marriage year, first job, a major illness, a relocation) to narrow the lagna. It takes longer, and it is far better than pretending an approximate time is exact.

The questions worth asking

Do not ask "what will happen to me". Ask:

• Which dasha am I in, and when does it change?
• Which graha in my chart is actually creating this problem, and through which house?
• Is this a permanent pattern in my kundli or a passing transit?
• What is the realistic window in which this improves?
• Which remedy addresses the cause, and which are optional?
• What should I not do during this period?

Those six questions will tell you within ten minutes whether the person in front of you is reading your chart.

What experienced astrologers will not do

• They will not name a death date or predict a death. Shastra prohibits it and there is no ethical version of it.
• They will not tell you a disease will be cured by a stone instead of treatment. Jyotish sits alongside medicine, never in place of it.
• They will not escalate a fee mid-reading because "the dosha is very serious".
• They will not tell you a specific person is your enemy or that someone has done black magic on you as a first explanation.
• They will not sell you a ₹50,000 yantra for a ₹1,100 problem.

Fear is the easiest way to sell astrology, and it is the clearest sign to walk away.

Remedies: what proportionate looks like

Genuine upay usually fall into four categories, roughly in this order of preference:

1. Behavioural / discipline — timing decisions, avoiding certain periods for big commitments, dietary and conduct changes.

2. Mantra and jaap — a specific graha or deity mantra with a count and duration.

3. Daan and seva — donating the item associated with the afflicted graha, feeding, service.

4. Pooja / havan — Navgraha shanti, Rudrabhishek, Mahamrityunjay Jaap where the affliction is serious.

Gemstones come last, not first, and only after the strength of the lagna and the graha has been established. A stone prescribed without dasha analysis is jewellery.

Kundli formats: what you actually need

• Basic reading (30–45 minutes): chart, dashas, one focused question. Right for most people.
• Detailed consultation (60–90 minutes): full chart, divisional charts, life-area review, remedies with timelines.
• Handwritten kundli report: the full chart written out by the acharya — dashas, yogas, bhava analysis, remedies — kept as a lifelong family document. Families order this at birth, before marriage, or when they want everything in one place.
• Marriage matching (guna milan + beyond): the 36-guna score is only the start; Mangal dosha, 7th house strength, Navamsa and both charts' dashas matter more than the score alone.

What it costs

Realistic 2026 fees for a competent astrologer in India:

• Focused consultation (30–45 min): ₹700 – ₹1,500
• Senior astrologer, detailed session: ₹1,100 – ₹2,100
• Marriage matching with both charts: ₹1,500 – ₹3,000
• Handwritten kundli report: ₹2,100 upwards, priced by number of pages
• Per-minute AI or chat readings: a few rupees per minute — useful for quick questions, not a substitute for a senior reading

Extremely low fees usually mean a template report. Extremely high fees should come with an explanation of what extra analysis you are paying for.

How to prepare so you get value

1. Write your question in one sentence before the call.

2. Collect exact birth details for everyone involved.

3. List three or four dated life events — they help verify the chart.

4. Decide what you will actually be willing to do as a remedy. There is no point receiving a 40-day jaap you will not start.

5. Take notes, or ask for the session summary in writing.

6. Do not consult five astrologers about the same question in the same month. Pick one, follow through, review after the dasha changes.

Frequently asked questions

What if I do not know my exact birth time?

Bring the closest estimate and three or four dated life events. An experienced astrologer can rectify the birth time by matching those events to dasha periods. It is a legitimate, well-established process — but it takes extra time, so mention it when you book.

Is an online astrology consultation as good as meeting in person?

Yes, for the reading itself. The chart, dashas and analysis do not depend on physical presence. In-person sessions help only if you want a written kundli handed over, or you are more comfortable talking face to face.

How long before a remedy shows effect?

It depends on what is being addressed. Behavioural and timing changes show effect within weeks. Mantra and jaap remedies are usually prescribed for 40 days or one full cycle. Dasha-level patterns change when the antardasha changes — that could be months. Any astrologer promising a result in three days is guessing.

Do I need a gemstone?

Usually not. Gemstones amplify a graha, which is only helpful when that graha is capable of doing good in your chart. Prescribed wrongly, they make matters worse. Ask which graha, which house, and why amplification is the right approach before buying anything.

Can astrology tell me about my health?

It can indicate vulnerability — the 6th, 8th and lagna, and the grahas involved — and the periods in which to be careful. It cannot diagnose, and it must never replace a doctor. A good astrologer will tell you to get tested.

Is Mangal dosha a reason to cancel a marriage?

Very often it is not. Mangal dosha is cancelled by several standard conditions, and the strength of the 7th house, the Navamsa chart and the dashas of both people matter far more than the label. Get a full matching before treating it as a blocker.

How often should I get my kundli read?

Once for a full baseline reading, then again when a mahadasha or antardasha changes, or before a major decision — marriage, property, a career shift, migration. Monthly readings of the same chart do not add information.

Can I consult about someone else's chart?

Yes, for immediate family — parents about children, spouses, or a proposed match. Bring their exact birth details. Reading someone's chart without their knowledge for personal advantage is discouraged.
