Today's Panchang

Pancha Anga

The five limbs of today

Panchang literally means five limbs — tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana and vaara. Together they describe the quality of the day.

Tithi

Lunar day — decides vrat and festival dates.

Nakshatra

Moon's constellation — used for naming and muhurat.

Yoga

Sun–Moon combination indicating the day's tone.

Karana

Half of a tithi — guides short-duration work.

Masa

Lunar month of the Hindu calendar.

Vaara

Weekday, ruled by its own planetary lord.

Using the Panchang in daily life

A short, practical guide to each element.

Tithi — the lunar day

A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain 12° over the Sun, so it can be shorter or longer than a solar day. Vrat days such as Ekadashi, Purnima and Amavasya are fixed by tithi at sunrise, which is why a festival date can shift by a day between regions.

Nakshatra — the Moon's mansion

The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras. The nakshatra active at your birth decides your naming syllable and much of your Vedic chart. For daily use, certain nakshatras favour travel, learning or new purchases.

Yoga and Karana

Yoga is derived from the combined longitudes of the Sun and Moon and describes the overall quality of the day. Karana is half a tithi and is consulted for short tasks — signing, sowing, starting a journey.

Rahu Kaal — the period to avoid

The daytime from sunrise to sunset is split into eight equal parts; one part each weekday belongs to Rahu. Auspicious beginnings — griha pravesh, engagements, new ventures — are avoided in this window, though ongoing work and daily nitya pooja continue as usual.

Abhijit Muhurat — the safe window

Roughly 24 minutes on either side of local solar noon, Abhijit is considered universally auspicious and is often used when no other muhurat is available. It is traditionally avoided only on Wednesdays for some specific rites.

Aaj ka margdarshan

Aaj kya karein, kya na karein

As per Vedic tradition, derived from today's tithi and nakshatra.

Kya karein (Do)
  • Snan-dhyan, japa aur daan — always auspicious as per Vedic tradition.
  • Good nakshatra for travel and learning, as per Vedic tradition.
Kya na karein (Don't)
  • Avoid new beginnings during Rahu Kaal.
  • Avoid signing major documents or agreements during Rahu Kaal.
Aaj ka Shloka

अहं सर्वस्य प्रभवो मत्तः सर्वं प्रवर्तते।

I am the source of all; from Me everything proceeds.

मैं ही सबका उद्गम हूँ, मुझसे ही सब कुछ प्रवृत्त होता है।
