Online Pooja in India: How Booking Works, What You Get & What It Costs

Booking a pooja online used to feel strange to most Indian families. You are used to calling a pandit ji you know, deciding a date over tea, and buying samagri from the shop near the temple. So when people first look at online pooja booking, the questions are always the same: is it real, who actually performs it, will the sankalp be taken in my name, and what do I actually receive at the end?

This guide answers all of that in plain language, based on how we run poojas for families across India and abroad.

What "online pooja" actually means

Online pooja does not mean a recorded video or an app playing mantras. It means a real pooja, performed by real acharyas at a real altar, with your name, gotra and sankalp spoken aloud — and you joining live on video.

There are three formats families usually choose from:

• Live online pooja — our acharyas perform the pooja at our pooja shala in Uttarkashi or Chandigarh. You join on a video call, watch the sankalp and aahuti, and receive prasad by courier.
• Pandit at home — an acharya travels to your home, brings the samagri, and performs the pooja in your own pooja room. We offer this across Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali and Zirakpur.
• Pooja on your behalf (parokṣa) — you cannot attend at all, so the acharyas perform the full vidhi with your sankalp and send you the recording and prasad.

Shastra permits a pooja to be performed on behalf of a yajmaan who is not physically present, as long as the sankalp names the person correctly — name, gotra, and purpose. That is the part that matters, and it is the part most people never ask about.

Step by step: how the booking works

Step 1 — Choose the pooja, not the price

Start from your intention. A Rudrabhishek for health and peace of mind, a Mahamrityunjay Jaap during illness, a Satyanarayan Katha for gratitude after something good, a Navgraha Shanti when a specific graha is troubling the kundli. If you are unsure, tell us the situation and our acharyas suggest the vidhi — we do not upsell a bigger pooja for a smaller problem.

Step 2 — Pick the date and muhurat

Some poojas are date-flexible; others are strongest on a specific tithi or vaar. Rudrabhishek on a Monday or in Sawan, Satyanarayan on Purnima, Ekadashi vrat poojas on the Ekadashi itself. Our panchang page shows tithi, nakshatra and Rahu Kaal for your city so you can avoid inauspicious windows.

Step 3 — Give the sankalp details

This is the most important step. You will be asked for:

• Full names of family members who should be included
• Gotra (if you do not know it, we help you work it out from your family deity and village)
• Nakshatra or date of birth, if the pooja is graha-related
• The specific prarthana — health, marriage, santaan, business, griha shanti

Step 4 — Choose with or without samagri

"With samagri" means we arrange every item — samagri list, flowers, havan samagri, dakshina — and you pay one price. "Without samagri" is cheaper and suits families who already keep a stocked pooja room or want to buy items themselves.

Step 5 — Attend or receive the recording

You get a video link before the muhurat. During the pooja the acharya will pause at sankalp and speak your names clearly so you can hear it. If you cannot attend, the full recording reaches you the same day.

Step 6 — Prasad and follow-up

Prasad, the abhishek jal or bhasma where applicable, and a short note on what was performed reach your address — anywhere in India, and internationally for NRI families. Our acharyas also tell you if any follow-up (a jaap count, a vrat, a daan) is advised.

What a genuine online pooja should always include

Use this as a checklist for any provider, not just us:

1. Named acharya — you should know who is performing your pooja, not "a pandit will be assigned".

2. Live sankalp in your name — audible, with gotra.

3. A published vidhi — what will be chanted, how many aahutis, how long.

4. Fixed price before booking — no dakshina pressure during the pooja.

5. Prasad dispatch confirmation — with tracking.

6. A recording — so the family that could not attend can still watch.

If a provider will not tell you who performs the pooja or how long it takes, that is your answer.

What it costs in India

Prices vary by vidhi length, number of acharyas and samagri. Realistic bands in 2026:

• Short jaap or simple pooja (1 acharya, 1–2 hours): ₹1,100 – ₹2,500
• Rudrabhishek / Satyanarayan Katha: ₹2,100 – ₹5,100 depending on samagri
• Mahamrityunjay Jaap (sankhya-based): ₹5,100 upwards, based on the number of jaaps
• Havan with multiple acharyas: ₹7,500 upwards
• Pandit at home in Tricity: add travel and samagri if you are not arranging it

Anything priced far below these bands usually means a shortened vidhi. Anything far above should come with a clear explanation of how many acharyas and how many jaaps you are paying for.

Common mistakes families make

• Booking on the wrong tithi because a weekend was more convenient. Ask first — many poojas can shift by a day for a much stronger muhurat.
• Guessing the gotra. Ask the eldest person in the family before the pooja.
• Ordering a "package" without knowing the vidhi. Fifteen minutes of mantra is not a Rudrabhishek.
• Not naming everyone. If the pooja is for the household, include the household.
• Skipping the post-pooja instruction. The daan or vrat the acharya suggests is part of the vidhi, not an add-on.

Is online pooja acceptable in shastra?

Yes, and this is not a modern workaround. The tradition of a yajmaan sponsoring a pooja performed by a ritvik on their behalf is ancient — pilgrimage centres have done exactly this for centuries for devotees who could not stay. What shastra insists on is correctness of sankalp, purity of the acharya's practice, and completion of the vidhi. Distance is not the deciding factor; sincerity and correctness are.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to be present on the video call for the pooja to work?

No. The pooja is valid when the sankalp is taken in your name with your gotra and intention. Attending is for your own bhaav and connection — many families join only for the sankalp and aarti and watch the rest later.

How far in advance should I book an online pooja?

Two to three days is comfortable for most poojas. For festival dates like Sawan Mondays, Navratri, Diwali Lakshmi Pooja or Mahashivratri, book a week or more ahead — muhurat slots fill first.

What if I do not know my gotra?

Tell us your family deity, native village and surname; in most cases the gotra can be identified. If it truly cannot be, shastra allows the sankalp to use Kashyap gotra, which our acharyas apply in that case.

Will I get proof that the pooja was performed?

Yes — a live video link, a recording afterwards, and prasad dispatched to your address with tracking.

Can NRI families book from outside India?

Yes. Most of our online poojas are booked by families in the US, UK, Canada, UAE, Australia and Singapore. Muhurat is calculated in IST and the call time is confirmed in your local timezone. Prasad ships internationally.

Is dakshina extra?

Not with us. The price shown includes acharya dakshina. You are never asked for more during or after the pooja.

Can the same pooja be repeated every month?

Yes, and for some purposes it is advised — monthly Rudrabhishek in Sawan or on Mondays, Satyanarayan on Purnima, Ekadashi poojas each fortnight. Recurring poojas are usually booked for a fixed number of months.
