Satyanarayan Vrat — full vidhi step by step

What you need at home

A clean chowki with a red cloth, a small Vishnu murti or photo, five kalash (small lotas of water), banana leaves for the mandap corners, panchamrit (milk-curd-ghee-honey-sugar), tulsi patra, five fruits, and 1.25 kg of atta prasad ingredients (sooji, ghee, sugar, banana). The five adhyaya

The katha has five adhyayas (chapters), each ending with a story that illustrates the fruits of the vrat. Adhyaya 1: the sage Narada asks Vishnu how a poor devotee can find peace. Adhyaya 2: the woodcutter's story. Adhyaya 3: the merchant Sadhu's forgotten vow. Adhyaya 4: the consequences of breaking the vow. Adhyaya 5: the final blessing. We chant all five in full — no shortcuts.

The prasad

The Satyanarayan prasad is a semolina halwa cooked in ghee, with mashed banana and grated coconut folded in at the end. It must be tasted only after the aarti is complete and offered first to the deity. We ship 500g of the prasad within 24 hours of the pooja anywhere in India.

The best day to perform it

Traditionally Purnima (full moon) of any month, especially Vaisakh, Kartik and Chaitra. Sankashti Chaturthi, Ekadashi and Guruvar (Thursday) are the next best. Avoid Amavasya and eclipse days. Preparation the day before

The senior member of the household observes a light diet — no onion, garlic, non-vegetarian food, alcohol, tobacco. Wash the pooja room floor with Ganga jal. Prepare the sooji, ghee, sugar, banana and coconut for the prasad in the morning of the pooja itself, not the night before. Keep new or freshly-washed clothes ready for every family member attending.

During the katha — how to sit

The head of the family (yajman) and spouse sit directly facing the chowki. Other family members sit behind them. Everyone faces east if possible, else north. Never sit with feet pointing towards the deity. Children may move around during the first two adhyayas but must be seated silently for the aarti and prasad distribution. Mobile phones are switched to silent — a Satyanarayan katha interrupted by a ringtone is considered a breach of shraddha and requires the last adhyaya to be repeated.

The five stories — what they teach

Story 1 (the poor Brahmin) — sincerity of intent matters more than wealth of offering. Story 2 (the woodcutter) — even the humblest work becomes worship when Bhagwan is remembered. Story 3 (the merchant Sadhu and his daughter Kalavati) — a promise made to Ishwar must be honoured no matter how successful you become. Story 4 (the consequences) — when the merchant forgets his vow, he loses everything; when he remembers, everything returns. Story 5 (the woodcutters of the forest) — even accidental hearing of the katha bestows fruits. Together, the five stories cover intent, effort, memory, karma and grace.

Aarti and prasad vidhi

After the fifth adhyaya, the aarti is sung (traditionally 'Jai Lakshmi Ramana'). The kapoor is lit and circulated seven times clockwise. Yajman offers the first spoon of prasad to the deity, then a spoon each to any pandits present, then family members starting from the eldest, ending with the youngest. Any prasad left at the end of the day is distributed to neighbours or given to a cow — never discarded.
