Hindi + English Checklist
A practical Navratri checklist for Kalash preparation, daily offerings and optional havan, with Hindi names and sensible substitutions.
By Sanatani Store · 8 October 2026
For Shardiya Navratri, 11–19 October 2026, prepare a simple worship space and the materials appropriate to your family’s practice. Vijayadashami follows on 20 October. Confirm the local Ghatasthapana timing separately; buying materials does not determine the muhurat.
This checklist separates daily worship, Kalash preparation and optional rituals. It is not a claim that every listed item is mandatory. Use our Navratri puja vidhi guide for preparation steps and the festival page for the date overview.
Daily worship essentials —
Choose a stable, clean place. Do not pour liquids onto paper or delicate materials.
- Chowki or stable platform — चौकी: Use a secure surface with enough room for offerings; avoid precarious stacked furniture.
- Clean cloth — साफ कपड़ा: Red is customary in many households. Keep fabric away from lamps.
Clean existing utensils may serve your household needs; ask about specific formal-ritual requirements.
- Flowers — पुष्प: Use fresh flowers appropriate to your practice. A costly garland is not necessary for every pooja.
- Akshat — अक्षत: Commonly uncooked unbroken rice offered in worship. Confirm any tradition-specific preparation.
Keep small amounts; avoid wastage and check product safety.
- Fruit or freshly prepared bhog — फल या ताजा भोग: Choose food suitable for the household and any guests’ allergies.
Use according to your custom and supervise the flame.
Keep a readable copy or reliable translation. See the Durga Saptashati guide before committing to a complete Path.
Kalash / Ghatasthapana checklist —
Drik Panchang describes a grain vessel and Kalash preparation. Some families use barley; others follow Sapta Dhanya. Confirm your procedure before buying a mixture.
Vessel and grains
- Wide clay vessel — चौड़ा मिट्टी का पात्र, if used for sowing grains.
- Clean soil — साफ मिट्टी, free from sharp debris and unsuitable contaminants.
Check that the seeds are suitable for sowing rather than assuming every packaged grain will sprout.
- Kalash — कलश, commonly clay, copper or brass according to the ritual. Confirm what your pandit recommends rather than purchasing an expensive vessel unnecessarily.
Water and Kalash offerings
- Clean water — साफ जल; Ganga Jal may be used where available and customary.
- Sacred thread —
- Betel nut — सुपारी and coin — सिक्का, where the procedure calls for them.
The plant and number depend on the guidance followed; ask about locally available alternatives.
- Coconut with husk — जटा वाला नारियल, where used.
- Clean wrapping cloth — साफ कपड़ा, according to custom.
Optional items —
Some families offer a chunri or shringar items such as bangles, sindoor or a bindi. Others keep worship simpler. Dhoop, incense, camphor, sandalwood or additional offering materials may be used in specific practices, but should not be presented as a universal compulsory list.
Smoke can aggravate breathing conditions. Avoid excessive incense or camphor, keep the space ventilated, and use safe alternatives where needed. Do not place a glass cover over a lamp unless the lamp’s design safely allows it; a cover does not make an unattended flame safe.
Havan materials — only if havan is planned
Havan is a separate ritual scope. Ask your pandit for the specific samagri, fuel, ghee, vessel and purnahuti materials rather than using a generic internet list. A suitable location, ventilation, fire precautions and building rules are as important as the ingredients.
If enquiring for Durga Saptashati Path, confirm whether havan is included. The presence of havan ingredients in a guide does not make them part of a booking or a product kit.
Kanya Pujan preparation
Family customs differ on Ashtami and Navami. Confirm the local tithi and your practice before inviting guests. Common preparations may include freshly cooked food, clean serving utensils and modest gifts if customary. Do not insist on a fixed number of children or expensive presents.
Involve parents or guardians, respect children’s comfort and consent, and ask about food allergies. Ingredients for halwa, puri and chana are often used, but households should plan suitable portions and safe food handling instead of treating one menu as mandatory for all families.
How to avoid last-minute stress
1. Check what is already at home
Wash and organise existing utensils. Separate reusable items from perishable flowers and food. A calm, clean setup matters more than the size of the shopping bill.
2. Confirm the ritual before shopping
Daily pooja, Kalash sthapana, a complete Saptashati Path and havan have different requirements. Ask about your exact scope. If a pandit is bringing materials, request a clear list of what remains your responsibility.
3. Buy fresh items close to the day
Keep fruit, flowers and food ingredients safely. Do not rely on a last-minute courier delivery for essential perishable materials. Overseas families should confirm what can actually be sourced locally.
4. Keep the diya safe
Use a stable heat-resistant base, supervise continuously and keep it away from cloth, children and pets. An Akhand Jyoti requires continuous safe supervision; do not leave it burning while you leave home or sleep.
5. Dispose respectfully and responsibly
After the observance, separate reusable vessels, food, soil and packaging. Follow local waste and water-protection rules. Do not immerse plastic, synthetic cloth, coins or other waste in rivers. Ask your pandit about a respectful environmentally responsible conclusion.
Confirm service materials with Sanatani Store
For pandit-at-home poojas in Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali, or live online participation from elsewhere, enquire through the existing Durga Saptashati service. Confirm your date, quote, samagri responsibility, recitation scope and delivery arrangements. This checklist does not promise product availability, a free kit or a nine-day package.
Frequently asked questions
No. The list covers different scopes. Daily worship needs fewer items than Kalash preparation or havan.
Are barley and Sapta Dhanya the same thing?
No. Barley is one grain; Sapta Dhanya refers to a selection of seven grains. Which is used depends on your practice. Ask before buying rather than mixing a random selection.
Tell your pandit what is locally available and ask about an appropriate alternative. Do not invent a universal substitution or import restricted plant material without checking local rules.
Does booking the Path include every item on this list?
No. A preparation guide is not a package specification. Confirm the service’s actual inclusions, samagri arrangements and quote before booking.
Can I leave an Akhand Jyoti burning overnight?
Never leave a flame unattended. Only consider a continuous lamp if safe continuous supervision is possible; otherwise discuss a safer practice with your pandit.
